AKRON, Ohio—Representatives from Bridgestone Americas, Inc., the PGA TOUR and Northern Ohio Golf Charities gathered today at the annual Bridgestone Invitational Northern Ohio Golf Charities Luncheon to announce donations to 37 charities throughout Northeast Ohio who received grants as part of the $835,000 generated by the 2010 World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational.

Part of the $835,000 total are two programs that were new to the tournament in 2010. Tickets Fore Charity ($26,000) is a unique program that gives charities the opportunity to promote ticket sales and receive 75 percent of the ticket price, while Birdies Fore Charity ($11,000) is a fund-raising program promoted by Akron’s Children Hospital.

Grant recipients in attendance included Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, American Red Cross, Lighthouse, Boy Scouts Buckeye Council, Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio, The First Tee, Cleveland Foodbank, Women’s Board of Akron Children’s Hospital, and Pregnancy Care of Summit County.

“Thanks to the support of the PGA TOUR and this entire community, the positive reach of the Bridgestone Invitational is felt 52 weeks of the year,” said Gini Paige, president, executive committee, Northern Ohio Golf Charities, Inc. “Today, we celebrate the dollars raised by this world-class event and the impact that those dollars make on countless lives throughout Northeast Ohio.”

For the third year, Bridgestone Americas, Inc. awarded an additional $5,000 of its own funds to a charitable organization facing a significant challenge. The Bridgestone Award was presented to Pregnancy Care of Summit County. Pregnancy Care of Summit County has a 39-year history of serving women who are facing untimely pregnancies. Tests, emotional support, educational services, and material goods are provided free of charge.

“Our company has a culture of giving back to its communities and we view our partnership with the Northern Ohio Golf Charities as an extension of this philosophy put into practice,” said Gary Garfield, CEO and president, Bridgestone Americas, Inc. “Congratulations to the Bridgestone Award recipient Pregnancy Care of Summit County and the other charities recognized today. We feel privileged to be in a position to support organizations which are so valuable to the community.”

Northern Ohio Golf Charities Foundation is part of a volunteer organization that has sponsored professional golf tournaments at Firestone Country Club for over 50 years. Tournaments have provided more than $20 million to local charities seeking to improve the quality of life in Northeast Ohio.

“The true winner of the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational is charity,” said Don Padgett III, Executive Director, Bridgestone Invitational. “Everyone associated with the Bridgestone Invitational—from the volunteers, to the corporate supporters, to the fans – can take pride in knowing that their involvement with the Bridgestone Invitational played an important role in supporting these outstanding Northeast Ohio organizations.”
