The Presidents Cup, Greg Norman provide $150,000 (US) to aid Queenslanders affected by devastating floods in Australia

The PGA TOUR, on behalf of  The Presidents Cup and International Team Captain Greg Norman, donated $150,000 (US) to the Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal, launched to help Queenslanders affected by the recent floods.  Flooding has submerged thousands of homes and forced unprecedented evacuations; since November 30, 2010, a total of 35 people are confirmed to have perished in flood-related incidents, with at least nine more victims listed as missing.

“It has been incredibly difficult to watch the pain and suffering caused by the recent floods in Australia.  Our thoughts and prayers are with all who have been impacted by this disaster,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem.  “We applaud Greg Norman for his partnership, and together, we hope this donation will provide some relief to those who are going through such a terrible time.”

“I witnessed the floods of 1974, which at the time were devastating, but pale by comparison to the current tragedy in Queensland,” said Norman.  “As a born and bred Queenslander, my heart goes out to all that have been affected by the recent floods, but know from the resiliency, determination and deep inner strength and spirit of the people of my home state, that they will rise above the tragedy and rebuild their lives and return to the peaceful harmony that only Queensland can give.  I truly appreciate the PGA TOUR joining me in making this contribution and extend my heartfelt gratitude for all those who have contributed to the relief efforts.”

In addition to Norman, 22 Australians play on the PGA TOUR, by far the largest contingent of international players, including Robert Allenby, Stuart Appleby, Aaron Baddeley, Jason Day, Steve Elkington, Geoff Ogilvy and Adam Scott.  Elkington pledged support to the flood relief efforts by earmarking $1,000 per birdie he made during the Bob Hope Classic.  He totaled 24 birdies, which equates to a $24,000 donation to the Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal.  

Making a positive impact on the communities where PGA TOUR tournaments are held and players live is the driving force behind the TOUR’s charitable mission.  In 2009, the PGA TOUR donated $100,000 (AUS) on behalf of The Presidents Cup to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal, a fund organized to assist individuals and communities affected by devastating fires in Victoria, Australia.

Players are not personally paid for their participation in The Presidents Cup; there is no purse or prize money.  Each competitor, instead, designates charities or golf-related projects of his choice to receive a portion of the funds raised through the staging of each Presidents Cup.  On behalf of the players, captains and captains’ assistants, more than $4.2 million was distributed to charitable causes from The Presidents Cup 2009.  Additional donations were made to The First Tee of San Francisco and the Victorian Bushfire Appeal in 2009.  With today’s announcement included, more than $23 million has been raised for charity since the inception of The Presidents Cup in 1994.
