July 28, 2014

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla.-  Giving back isn’t only a mission of the PGA TOUR, it’s a passion. It resonates through the more than $2 billion in all-time charitable giving by its tournaments to help enrich the communities where they are held, as well as the charitable foundations and initiatives of the players themselves.

PGA TOUR 2014: Playing with a Purpose presented by Barclays is a one-hour CBS Sports special airing at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday, August 2, that will document the charitable endeavors of players and organizations involved within the PGA TOUR family, as well as those who benefit from these efforts.  Featured stories include:

  • Rory McIlroy – Through the Rory Foundation, the newly crowned British Open champion gives back to various children’s charities all over the world including The Northern Ireland Cancer Fund and the Daisy Lodge. The lodge helps families with children who have cancer get away from home as therapy for both the children and their parents. Recently, Rory visited the newest facility and met with families.
  • Rickie Fowler/Jake Reddington – In May of 2013, Moore, Oklahoma was devastated by an F5 tornado that killed 24 people and injured 337 more. Local high school golfer Jake Reddington barely survived the storm by taking cover in his bathtub. Jake’s favorite golfer, PGA TOUR star Rickie Fowler, recently surprised Jake and the rest of his golf team with a visit to Moore. Rickie then gave him an even bigger surprise when he brought Jake to San Diego for the Farmers Insurance Open where he spent the day with Rickie inside the ropes.
  • Paul Tesori and Baby Isaiah – The caddie for former U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson has gone through both the greatest and most difficult year of his life. He and his wife Michelle welcomed their first child Isaiah. Soon after birth, complications arose and Isaiah almost died. Baby Isaiah was diagnosed with Down Syndrome. The Tesori’s chose to give back to the hospital and the doctors who helped save Isaiah through the Tesori Family Foundation.
  • Phil Mickelson – Barclays Ambassador Phil Mickelson gives back to many charities around the country through Birdies for the Brave and programs that promote education. Most recently, Mickelson has been helping to give books to children. Through sales of his now famous blue hat, through the Blue for Books program, kids in struggling school districts get the vital books needed to advance their education.

The show will also showcase the efforts of other PGA TOUR stars like Ian Poulter and Ryan Palmer, as well as The Barclays and the tournament’s continued charitable outreach in the New York Metropolitan area.
