2013 CVS Caremark Charity Classic generates $1.3 million for Rhode Island charities

December 19, 2013

WOONSOCKET, R.I.– Just in time for the holidays, 81 area nonprofit organizations received generous funds from the CVS Caremark Charity Classic at a presentation held today at CVS Caremark’s headquarters. As the largest charitable sporting event in Rhode Island that attracts world-class golfers, the tournament donated $1.3 million this year to organizations across Southern New England, bringing the total support since 1999 to more than $17 million.

CVS Caremark President and CEO Larry Merlo joined PGA TOUR professionals Billy Andrade and Brad Faxon in co-hosting the ceremony and check presentation for the tournament, which draws top PGA TOUR and LPGA golfers to Rhode Island Country Club. The trio distributed the funds amid a holiday atmosphere, and inspirational stories were shared by a student and Rose-Marie Grant, the Head of School for the Highlander Charter School – one of the nonprofit recipients of the funds – located in Providence.

“Giving back to our local communities and supporting organizations that help children and families in need is at the heart of the Charity Classic,” said Eileen Howard Boone, Tournament Chairwoman. “By combining world-class entertainment with financial support to important nonprofit organizations in our community, the Charity Classic has become a truly special event for the golfers and our non-profit partners.”

Funds provided by the 2013 CVS Caremark Charity Classic will support numerous charitable organizations and touch the lives of people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. From assisting Meeting Street, which provides valuable, hands-on therapeutic care to over 3,000 children and families annually; to supporting Save The Bay, an organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the historic Narragansett Bay region; to helping Highlander Charter School in offering a quality education to students with a variety of financial backgrounds – the Charity Classic provides significant funding to target critical needs within the community.

“Due to the generosity of the CVS Caremark Charity Classic, Highlander Charter School can continue to offer a personalized, small classroom education to students who might otherwise be unable to afford it,” said Rose-Marie Grant, Head of School for Highlander Charter School. “At Highlander Charter School, we stress individual attention, nurturing, diversity, and social activism as our core values. This requires us to keep class sizes small, with a robust teaching staff to care for every child. The generosity of the CVS Caremark Charity Classic helps make this possible, empowering more children with a quality education with which they can reach their dreams.”

Howard Boone added, “It’s the inspiration of places like Highlander Charter School that keep us and our sponsors, volunteers and fans going year after year, to continue to give back as much to the community as we possibly can. More than 20 working charities and nearly 1,000 volunteers make this event a reality, so we are extremely proud to host an event that has become so meaningful in our community.”

A total of 81 nonprofit organizations received funds raised by the CVS Caremark Charity Classic.
