New Research Proves The First Tee is Empowering Youth for Success on and off the Golf Course

November 21, 2018

It’s Thanksgiving week and The First Tee has lots to be thankful for. The First Tee is releasing new research measuring the organization’s impact. And the results? The First Tee is transformative and empowering youth. How you ask? Through programs that seamlessly introduce them to golf and life skills. In open-ended, unaided essays, program participants articulated the impact of their involvement with The First Tee.  This new research analyzed qualitative data of kids from The First Tee’s Life Skill Experience telling how The First Tee has impacted them personally, and from an Adult/Mentor relationship perspective. Highlights include:

  • 87% of participants say they have an improved sense of empowerment
    • “Gave me a greater sense of confidence.”
    • “I’m more goal oriented.”
  • 85% have personal ownership of The First Tee’s Nine Core Values
    • Honesty, Integrity, Sportsmanship, Respect, Confidence, Responsibility, Perseverance, Courtesy
  • 81% demonstrate self-improvement/personal transformation
    •  “My grades have improved.”
    • “I’m making better decisions.”

Youth like Shahbaz Hashmi, a recent alum of The First Tee of San Antonio, are finding success through the life skills and core values taught through The First Tee’s golf programs. “The core values taught by The First Tee - honesty, respect, courtesy, judgment - are not simply instilled in me, they are me. These values serve as the template for which I live my life.” Hashmi put the core values to use earlier this year during a round of golf with his hero, Tiger Woods. Hashmi was the grand prize winner of the 2018 Wells Fargo and The First Tee’s Succeeding Together contest earning him the spot in the Pro Am with the PGA TOUR player of his choice at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Hashmi is one of the 5 million youth reached annually through The First Tee which provides educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf.
