80th birthday surprise for longtime Houston Open volunteer

April 11, 2018

As part of the PGA TOUR Volunteer Appreciation Program sponsored by Myrbetriq® (mirabegron), the Houston Open teamed up with PGA TOUR player Peter Malnati to surprise Houston Open volunteer Carroll Hartle with a birthday cake for his 80th birthday.

Hartle, of Galveston, TX, has volunteered as part of the Houston Open’s on-course shuttle crew and captain of the transition from No. 17 to No. 18 holes for the last nine of his 14 years volunteering.

His long-time commitment and passion to the tournament is unwavering. During the tournament week, he drives more than 60 miles to stay with friends who live near the golf course. For seven straight days, he begins each morning at 4:30 a.m. with breakfast at Denny’s before he assumes his volunteer shift from 5:30 a.m. to the end of play. Hartle was stunned, tearful, and extremely appreciative for the birthday cake recognition and that Malnati took time during tournament week to participate in this kind gesture.  Malnati seemed to have as much fun as the tournament volunteers and was a great sport.

Astellas Pharma US, makers of Myrbetriq® (mirabegron), and the PGA TOUR Volunteer Appreciation Program would like to extend their appreciation to Susan Magalee and the entire Houston Open tournament team for orchestrating the surprise and for helping to showcase the value and appreciation for volunteers.
